Amazon AWS EC2 Instances

EC2 instances are variations of the AWS service that determine the type of capacity your project or application will need; it is important to plan your computing needs around AWS instances.

So you’ve finally decided to make the big leap to the Amazon cloud computing platform to host your project or business effort on the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud. However, one detail you will need to sort out before you truly make use of the platform the way you’re supposed to, is the issue of Amazon service instances.

To explain in detail, AWS EC2 instances, as they are usually called, are variations of the Amazon AWS service, which are classified according to the amount of memory usage or CPU performance they require. Some applications typically need more CPU than RAM, while others require more RAM than CPU and it is determining where your requirements lie that dictates the choice of instances you select for your use.

AWS instance types start from the Standard Instances, which are typically suitable for your run-of-the-mill project or application to Micro Instances, High-CPU instances, which focus on CPU usage as well as High-Memory instances focused on those who intend to use a high amount of memory to Cluster Compute, Cluster GPU instances and the final High I/O AWS instances.
These Amazon EC2 instances come mostly built for the Linux platform but there is a Microsoft Windows variation of the EC2 service for those who have applications and projects built for this sort of environment.

Choosing which AWS EC2 instance to use means determining what sort of capacity your project or application will need in the first place, which was why you opted to use the cloud service platform to start with. Failure to determine your needs appropriately could easily put you in a situation where you find yourself spending more for AWS instances that do not suit your needs.

Think in terms of what you are trying to achieve, someone running an image sharing service off your EC2 instance should opt for lots of memory rather than being focused on CPU power. If you’re running an application that crunches algorithms tracking object movements in space then going for CPU power would be more appropriate. You can also start from the minimal possible variation of each instance type and then increase your computing requirements as your needs grow larger.
