Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud

Shared hosting is no longer the best option for storing and safeguarding data. Today there is the option of Amazon elastic compute cloud, a new efficient and affordable technology.

The beauty of regular shared hosting is that regardless of what sort of website you’re running, you tend to have an idea of what you’re going to pay for that privilege monthly, quarterly or annually. However, shared hosting doesn’t cut it when you’re doing something more serious than hosting a five-page personal website. In such situations, people opt for options like the new rage in town: the cloud, which is ably represented by offerings such as Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud.

The affordability and leverage offered by cloud services have seen everyone from hobbyist developers to established corporate firms, using the advantages of elastic compute cloud technology to their benefit. However, despite all the advantages of the cloud, there are some problems that concern managing cost, security and availability issues.

Pricing models for cloud services are not a shared hosting affair as they are based on elements that cannot be easily determined in advance especially when you use a mix of options available with the Amazon Elastic Cloud. Most soon find themselves racking up unnecessary costs with no means to determine how much exactly they should be spending and how to optimize their existing subscriptions and pay less.

In terms of Security issues, the Amazon cloud tends to work more like a dedicated service platform. With shared hosting, security is largely the problem of the hosting company but cloud services make it largely your problem. How then do you monitor and mitigate the risk?

Availability is pretty much the same thing, without analytics nothing is really going to inform you where the high load demands are originating from or whether you’re under-utilizing what you’re paying for.

AWS elastic load balancing is meant to help you deal with such circumstances and distribute load but it’s not free. Cloud elasticity is exactly what it is in terms of price as well: Elastic.

Why pay Amazon to handle the additional load when you can determine where the load is coming from using analytics tools then see if you can tweak aspects of your code to fix the problem instead of relying on elastic load balancing?

Cloud Reports Usage Analytics gives cloud users the ability manage and monitor their cost, security and availability issues while leveraging the advantages of the cloud platform at the same time.
