To begin the calculation and recommendations, an AWS EC2 compute customer only needs to sign up for Cloud Reports. 24 hours after entering a read only API key into the analytics service, Cloud Reports presents an analysis of the past 2 weeks of their usage in the user’s account dashboard. If the data is predictable enough, we will make initial recommendations for AWS Reserved Instances purchases. From that point onward, the system collects and analyzes additional usage data and analyzes it continuously. The AWS Reserved Instance purchase recommendation is made only after we have high confidence in the accuracy of the usage data. Cloud Reports also provides the user with detailed graphs showing the basis of the usage data that is the source for the recommendation.
At the end of the first 30 days, Cloud Reports will have 45 days of actual usage behavior and can offer rock solid AWS Reserved Instance purchase recommendations. Cloud Reports’ recommendations include the type of AWS Reserved Instance as well as the best availability zone to have it placed taking into consideration a user’s AWS topology.
After the purchase of an EC2 Reserved Instance, the system will also track the actual utilization of the AWS Reserved Instance and will notify the user if something has changed in their usage pattern. We will then recommend if the user should either increase the EC2 Reserved Instance utilization by adding more workloads that could be performed on the underutilized AWS Reserved Instance, or will make a recommendation for the EC2 Reserved Instance to be sold on the AWS Reserved Instance marketplace.
Cloud Reports will also notify the user of an upcoming expiration date for an AWS Reserved Instance and make a recommendation if the user should renew a purchase or, due to their actual usage, revert to using an on demand EC2 compute resource to satisfy the actual usage level required.
