What is Amazon Trusted Advisor?

Amazon Trusted Advisor is a key part of AWS support services for its cloud computing platform users. The advisor offers the users of Amazon Web Services or AWS advice and recommendations about restricting their spending while making a better usage of various features and facilities of the cloud computing program. The advisor plays a key role in helping users keep their applications safe and secure and answers their technical questions and operational issues.

Features of Amazon Trusted Advisor

This service from Amazon draws upon the aggregated operation history of AWS and the experiences of existing customers. This involves inspection of the overall AWS environment and its usage by various customers which is followed by recommendations about how to improve the efficiency levels, close security gaps and save money.  Available to customers with business and enterprise-level support, this service includes over 100 checks that aim at enhancing customer value. Some popular checks are:

  • Cost Optimizing Checks: This feature aims at ensuring that the customers use their money in a optimum manner and identifies underutilised EC2 instances,  idle elastic load balancers,  underutilized EBS volumes and unused elastic IPs.
  • Security Checks: This feature identifies the security level of your instances and applications running on it. It identifies and provides information about Open ports,  CDR configurations or other items that can create potential security vulnerabilities.
  • Fault Tolerance Checks- This feature checks the ability of the instances and applications to deal with faults like absence of ESB snapshots,  imbalances in EC2 availability and identification of VPNs having suboptimal tunnel configurations, EC2 instances that are being over utilized, configuration level of auto scaling resources and RDS backups.

Amazon AWS support is available at an additional charge to customers who need support in addition to access to the company’s resource center, service health dashboard, discussion forums, blog and support for health checks. Apart from guiding customers about how to use all AWS features, products and services together, AWS premium support offers guidance on optimizing the services to meet the individual needs.

AWS customer support includes design reviews and architectural guidance for specific use cases and applications. AWS support pricing is available in various versions including the developer level tier at a fixed rate and business and enterprise level tiers at discounted levels at higher usages. This support feature is available for common operating systems and common application stack components.
