Excessive Number of EBS Volume Snapshots

Excessive Number of EBS Volume Snapshots

Newvem checks for the sprawling of EBS volume snapshots, which results in an excessive number of snapshots. As this decreases the overall efficiency of the backup process, and is also not cost-efficient, we suggest to remove the unnecessary snapshots and define a retention policy. To do so, check your Newvem EBS snapshots report to find the EBS volume that holds multiple snapshots and remove the unnecessary snapshots, refine retention policy, and generate an automatic procedure.

Our identification of the issue is based on the following data: One or more EBS volumes have more than a single backup snapshot.

How to Find EBS Volumes with Multiple Snapshots

To find your Amazon EBS Snapshot:

  1. Log in to the AWS Management Console.
  2. Select Amazon EC2.
  3. Select Snapshots in the left side Navigation pane.

The EBS Snapshots pane appears.

To remove snapshots from EBS volumes:

  1. Log in to the AWS Management Console.
  2. In the Navigation pane, Under Elastic Block Store, click Snapshots.
  3. Right-click on the snapshot to delete, and in the menu that appears, select Delete Snapshot.

Learn how to use the command lines and API for that matter.
