This is a very good initiative by AWS. It allows the application to be HA and helps make DR site easily. Though AWS Instance backed AMI has command line tool available, this functionality allows to copy EBS backed AMI which is more popular AMI type.

One thing that is important about AMI copying. You need new kernel and Ram Disk IDs. AWS knows how to find similar ones in the target region if it’s part of their supported kernels. However if your AMI is using a custom kernel, and it has no name that can be matched to a similar one in the target region, the copy operation will fail (according to AWS documentation).

Most kernels don’t have a name and even fewer have descriptions. Another way to tackle this would be to try and find a similar AMI in the target region, and grab its kernel (and ramdisk if needed) IDs.
