The level of interest in cloud computing technologies has skyrocketed over recent years. However, industry-wide consensus on the what cloud computing actually is has proven to be elusive. Let’s take a closer look at public clouds, specifically infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) clouds, most notably those offered by Amazon Web Services (AWS), Rackspace, GoGrid and others, and the unique challenges and opportunities they present.
The drive to adopt public IaaS originates from straightforward business common-sense – cloud computing is a faster, cheaper and more agile alternative to building IT infra-structure than traditional alternatives. Nowadays, deployment and configuration is a one-click browser-based operation; APIs make integration with other systems a straightforward process. The cloud business model: payment for what you consume, and no upfront capital investment outlays, makes great economic sense. In addition, the almost-instant access to scalable computing infrastructure capacity makes the cloud perfect for meeting the dynamic requirements of start-ups and developers, for whom the cloud is the natural solution of choice.
Despite the many concerns about IaaS, cloud adoption will continue to accelerate as IT professionals become more comfortable with the cloud. In fact, we believe that the challenge of cloud infrastructure has now shifted from adoption to the challenge of effectively using and managing an enterprise’s cloud over time, and ensuring it meets its business needs.
At Newvem we believe that using and managing IT infrastructure in the cloud computing era requires a fundamentally new way to handle cloud resources much more in tune with utility based consumption and aligned with business performance.
